The Artist

George Michael Melnikoff was born in Shanghai, the son of Misha Melnikoff, a professional photographer hired by the Chinese government to follow and document Chiang Kai-Shek. George gained an early introduction to classic studio photography in 1952, when the family migrated to Montreal, Canada where his father opened a successful photography studio and George learned traditional dark room skills. His early exposure to the photographic arts would lead him to his true calling much later in life.

In 1993, George settled with his wife in Santa Cruz, California where he pursued photography as a hobby while holding down a full time tech career in Silicon Valley. During the 90’s he made the switch from classic film to digital photography and honed his Photoshop skills.

After retiring in 2014, George fully devoted his time and energy to his photography. Traveling to France, Italy and Spain, as well as Colorado, Montana and Arizona with his wife, Debbie, he captured many of the photos featured in this collection. At home in California he spent countless hours roaming the Northern and Central Coast photographing land and seascapes. Click here to view his iconic image, "Ancient Kalifornia".

George succumbed to pancreatic cancer at the age of 68, just as he was stepping into in his prime as a landscape and street photographer.

His work is a testimonial to his unique perception and appreciation of the beauty that surrounds us.
